A Green and Resilient Africa: Reflections on Two Days of Engagement and Action

As the Project Coordinator of the DAAD Alumni initiative “A Green and Resilient Africa,” I had the honor of bringing together nearly 40 young people, experts, and partners in Dakar around a shared goal: to think, learn, and act for a sustainable agroecological and energy transition in Africa.

As Project Coordinator of the DAAD Alumni initiative “A Green and Resilient Africa”, I had the privilege of leading a two-day workshop in Dakar, organized in collaboration with the YAAC – Youth Alliance for Agroecology and Climate and the DAAD Alumni Network, with support from the BMZ.

The aim was to mobilize and empower young Africans to take part in the agroecological and energy transition, by fostering dialogue, learning, and action.

🔸 Day 1 – Reflection and Exchange
The opening day was attended by representatives from the European Union and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Senegal, reaffirming their commitment to supporting African youth.
A panel discussion and a World Café provided space for participants to share ideas and propose solutions around four main topics:

  • Gender inclusion and women’s leadership

  • Sustainable management of mineral resources

  • Green entrepreneurship for youth

  • Climate finance

🔸 Day 2 – Action and Ecological Engagement
The second day took place at the Hann Forest and Zoological Park, a historical and ecological landmark in Dakar. Participants discussed the role of urban forests in carbon sequestration, biodiversity preservation, and urban resilience.
To combine learning with action, the YAAC donated four waste collection bins (240 L each) to the park to support its environmental management and cleanliness.

This experience was a valuable opportunity to demonstrate youth leadership, collaboration, and environmental responsibility, in line with the vision of the YAAC:

To mobilize and equip African youth to take concrete action for a greener, more inclusive, and more sustainable Africa.
